How low carb diets work and the potential benefits.
Low-carb diets work by depleting a person's carbohydrate stores, typically with an initial two week period of low carb dieting. During this time, the body is adapting to burning primarily fat for fuel instead of carbohydrates and insulin levels are usually reduced as well. Once adaptation has been achieved, the rest of the diet may be modified so that healthy fats make up from 50% to 60% (25g – 30g), or even higher at times if needed while carbs comprise only 20%. This also includes periods when exercising intensely during which glycogen depletion will need to be replenished before hitting your next target.
It should be noted that not all adaptations happen instantly; some people take longer than others and it can depend on factors such as age, weight and genetics.
